Rest works

I can't believe it, but last Wednesday's beauty sleep did the job.

New record.
30 mins stepper, 679
25 mins bike, 269

No big plans for the weekend, except the celebration of our national holiday Koninginnedag ('Queensday'). It's basically three hours of free drinking in the home of Dutch lager, the Heineken brewery here in Cork.

Leve de Koningin!

A quick nap after work

When getting home after work we were supposed to have a quick lie down; we were fairly tired, so it was a good idea jut to have a little rest before heading to the gym. Well, that didn't really work out as planned.... We woke up again by 21.15... hmmmm, we were probably tired....

So no gym tonight obviously; let's see if I can beat the 645 cals I did yesterday. With the rest we've got I should be able to.

Claim to fame!

It's great that you can go shopping after office hours in this country. There is no need to get into the crush on Saturday morning to get your groceries for the week. Just go after work, after the cinema, whatever time. The majority of large supermarkets are open until midnight during the week and Tesco's is even op 24/7 in some places. Brilliant!

So, as the freezer was getting fairly empty and we had to have something on the table for dinner tonight we decided to get some grub in Dunnes Stores in Douglas. Even though the upcoming National Elections have not been set yet, a date is to be expected very shortly, who is already campaigning to get re-elected? Yes, indeed, the Minister for Justice himself.

And of course the campaign workers asked whether I wanted to speak to the dearest man. "No, thank you" was my reply but then I thought, let's ask the ladies if they can help me to get voting rights for the National Election. As a EU citizen I have voting rights for the local and European elections, but not for the national government. That's not really helping when I'm paying my taxes here and have zero influence on the day to day running of the country. As if you would when you could vote, but at least it gives you a feeling of democratic influence and importance.

It took them three party members before somebody knew what the situation was. "If you want, you can run in by the Minister?". I didn't bother, the poor man is busy enough trying to get the votes from the people that can vote. The best was yet to come. "Would you be interested in joining the party, you look like a man who knows what he wants". Exactly, I want my voting rights, but not under the current legislation and I definetely do no want to give my vote to the PDs. Still, it was a good sales pitch, if you don't ask you don't get.

Oh, and the gym? That's for tomorrow.

New record!

I am a happy egg!

30 mins stepper, 649
25 mins bike, 237

Starting at level 10, increasing to 11, 12 and 13... yes!

Looks like the diesel engine has started to accelerate!

Working overtime

As Legal Eagle is studying anyway I did not mind to be asked do to some overtime, so yeah, I'm working away making a few dollars. It's been a quiet week again, we called up to some friends last night for a bottle of vino and a good old chat.

Another very good session last Thursday, 30 mins stepper, 632 cals, 25 mins bike 259 calls - not bad after all.

We're heading to an Indian Restaurant tonight, looking forward to it. Nelius has been going on about this place forever, so it's about time that we check it out.

Have a good weekend.

Future Shock: Property Crash

Tonight we watched Future Shock, an excellent program on the overheated Irish property market. How the hell are young couples willing to fork out 1600 EUR a month for a small home in the Dublin commuter belt? That is just nuts!

And well, the gym didn't bring anything special today either. It was like the usual stuff.

Stepper, 30 mins, 609
Bike, 25 mins, 271

And I figured out which are my true power songs for this week:
- Tiesto - Flight 436
- DJ Jean - Life me up

Taking a break from it all tomorrow - time for ironing and relaxing (and for uploading new tunes to the iPod)

Well done to Legal Eagle!

After the excellent result on her jurisprudence paper, she got an even better result on her EU Law paper.

Well done Legal Eagle, I'm proud of you!

A quiet enough weekend

It's Sunday evening and now that the housework is done, the law notes are printing, and the gym has been done, it's about time to watch Friends on the tele.

We had a great time on Friday nite with the old colleagues from GME; it was like a little reunion and it had been quite some time since we last saw them, so it went on until all hours in the morning. Saturday was a wasted day.... what you'd expect?

Not much happening either today, just law, housework and the gym, at least I broke my last record on the stepper, up to 633 cals at the moment, so happy with that. It's great to have some new dance tunes on the iPod, that 'power song' option really works!

Couldn't do any more

Sometimes you just feel that you're just not up to it. I managed to convince myself not to drive straight home but actually go into the gym and see how I'd get on. Well, I dragged myself up the stairs and onto the stairclimber and to be honest, I wasn't sure whether I was able to do my full 30 minutes, but I actuall did. The bike though, that bloody bike, I got on, cycled for a few minutes and I just knew. Not tonight, definetely not tonight.

Last Saturday

And I totally forgot to add that I broke my record, 625 on the stepper and 282 on the bike; broke the 900 cals in a session - and yeah, went out on the town that night having plenty of bevvies so it wasn't any helpful, but it was still great fun.

The sunshine is back today, and we're back in the office and in the gym tonight.

And, even more importantly, there is a new Royal Dutch Princess.

Oranje boven, oranje boven, leve de koningin!

Trying out the tripod!

Unfortunately the sunset hid behind the hill in front of us so I did not have change to play with shutter speed and aperture, but hey, I still managed to get some shots.

This one was taken a few weeks ago in Balla, Co. Mayo

And this Creogh Patrick - it's nuts to think that pilgrims climb that bare feet before celebrating mass at the summit.

And these ones were from tonight:

Suicidal dog!

What should have started as a lovely quiet walk to start the Easter Holidays turned into a bit of a nightmare. You know when you go for a walk and this stupid animal starts following you. Normally they just turn back after a while. Well, not this one. This stupid, stupid dog just keeps following us but keeps crossing the road, standing still in the middle of the road with cars approaching at 40mph. Shouting at him didn't help a single bit and surely it just had to happen that it got hit. There's nothing we could do. About five, six cars were able to avoid it but the last taxi car couldn't. An awful scream and hound followed and the stupid dog came back onto the pavement, limping like mad. He couldn't put down his front leg anymore so we don't know whether it's just badly bruised or broken.

Ringing the local coppers, emergency services or directory inquiries to no avail. 'We don't have something like an animal ambulance service in Ireland, would you like the number of a vet?'. So yeah, when the dog had limped into a side road the taxi driver went off to the local Garda station to report the situation. The dog? Don't know, hopefully it will be okay, it was limping alright, so I'd say it'll survive. There was no dog collar with a number or anything. The taxi driver has our number as we witnessed the entire ordeal. We'll see what happens.

Happy Easter

Good Friday!

Good Friday in Ireland is always a fantastic day!

First of all, it's days whereby the pubs and off licenses are closed. So everybody has been buying drink like there's no tomorrow during the week. If you'd visit Tesco's today, you'll notice the alcohol section cordoned off with a security guard on duty all day to prevent people purchasing that last bottle of wine or can of beer.

Then, there's the no meat eating business; so yeah, the pizzas that were delivered to work here earlier today, with plenty of bacon and pepperoni are being eaten by the pagans!

Happy Easter!

No more seat 3F - unless I pay for it!

Aer Lingus to charge passengers for pre-booking seats
03/04/2007 - 07:11:39

Aer Lingus is reportedly set to charge passengers for pre-booking seats on short haul flights.

Reports this morning say the recently privatised airline is planning to charge between €3 and €15 for pre-booked seats, depending on where the passenger wants to sit.

Customers who do not want to pre-book can choose a seat from what remains when they check-in, at no extra cost.

The new charges come on top of last month's increases in baggage fees and are due to come into force on May 23rd.

Aer Lingus claims they are a response to demand from business passengers to make the process of boarding and disembarking quicker and more efficient.

However, consumer groups are already criticising the move as a money-making exercise.

A quiet weekend

Well, I had big plans going to Funderland after work on Friday nite, but to be honest, we could only drag ourselves home to relax and watch some DVDs. Things did not really change on Saturday, it's been a day of spring cleaning, doing laundry, ironing and working at the legal studies.

At least I did manage to get a session on the stepper in, 30 mins, 609 cals, couldn't be bothered to get on the bike afterwards - wrecked!

So yeah, the weather is fantastic and the laundry is dry in no time. As the weekend is nearly over it's about time to get our act together and head for Funderland!
